Positions and Roles: Teaches Mathematics and Gifted for Grades 5-8; Teaches Mathematics for Educators course at local community college, Frankfort High School Assistant Band Director; PTO President; School-Wide Mentor Teacher
Professional awards, distinctions, and points of pride: Is a National Board Certified teacher in Early Adolescence Mathematics; Has presented at NCTM
Interesting personal facts: She loves the Mountaineers, Disney, and traveling; she marched in the Pride and played piccolo during her time at WVU; in her spare time she enjoys crafting and walking; has a twin sister who is also a teacher at the same school and sometimes they even co-teach together!
Why are you excited to be part of the M3T project?
“As teachers, we must be willing to embrace not only positive feedback, but also criticism in order to grow. I believe M3T is the key to creating a community where the focus is self-growth to better provide rich learning opportunities for students.”
Why do you teach mathematics?
“I like mathematics because it is logical – you have a problem and there is a solution to that problem – arriving at the solution may look different from one person to the next, but that is part of what makes the process so much fun!”
What are you focused on improving about mathematics teaching?
“Currently, I am bugged by the idea of how to get students to persevere when approaching a difficult task. It seems there is less perseverance in our younger students and I would like to improve mathematical discussion and perseverance among students.”
